Exclusives matter. During its latest financial report for the business year ending 31st March, 2021, Sony sold an eye-watering 58.4 million first-party games on PlayStation 5 and PS4. That’s a significant 17 per cent of the total 338.9 million games sold for its systems during the aforementioned term. Sales include both physical and digital purchases, with coronavirus skewing numbers further towards the PS Store.
Fascinatingly, the platform holder anticipates increased first-party revenue during the current fiscal year, which will end on 31st March, 2022. This is fascinating when you consider that juggernauts like The Last of Us: Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales all launched during the previous term. Obviously, ongoing sales of those titles will help contribute to these numbers, but clearly it has more than Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Horizon Forbidden West in the pipeline.
As interesting asides, PS4 has now sold more software than any other console in history, outperforming the previous record-holder, PS2. Sony has also said that it intends to invest even more money into its first-party pipeline, and based on these kind of numbers, it’s not hard to see why.

Firstparty does not sell. 🤪
@The_New_Butler Agreed that's why I hope Returnal gets support this Friday
Sounds... fascinatingly fascinating.
@The_New_Butler. I agree.games like gravity rush.the pupeteer.more sly cooper.etc are always welcome.word up son
Backwards compatibility is nice and all but at the end of the day, it's the exclusives that truly matters.
@The_New_Butler Tokyo Jungle 2!
It's crazy that all PS4/5 exclusives games sold 58.4 combined whereas Animal Crossing sold 32mio alone
Hmm, makes sense. I pretty much purchased all my PS consoles for the exclusives alone. All other games I can play on PC and/or Xbox.
Well, not Nintendo obviously but I’ve never been interested in their games.
Yup, exclusives matter, sony and nintendo is a proof of that. Great exclusives of course.
"... 17 per cent of the total 338.9 million games sold for its systems"
That leaves 83% for everyone else.
Sony does not needs to carry their system with 1st party. That you can play everything else out there is what sells it also.
It is the full package. Great 1st party + great 3rd party support.
@mariomaster96 Nintendo software moves Nintendo's hardware though. PS has like 60% more titles in general from third party, it's different markets and a different strategy that's paying off for both of them.
That 17% becomes even more impressive when (using rough numbers from a couple sources) exclusives make up only about 9% of total games released.
@The_New_Butler
Sorry to burst your bubble but i read an article earlier this month that sony will concentrate on more AAA titles like horizon than the lesser known titles like gravity rush.
@Yomogi you call ps5 only being able to do ps4 emulation backwards compatibility? My xbox one series X does from the original to 360 to xbox one and the newer titles. Sonys excuse is really sad
But but PlayStation need a gamepass service of its own lol.
@mariomaster96 Proof that any game can sell well even if it's not a blockbuster title.
@Agramonte Tbh, it is surprising. the best-selling PS4 exclusive which is Spiderman has sold 20M copies but the PS4 has 115.9M unit sold. I guess exclusive titles is not the main reason why people buy PS consoles.
@BansheeNorn my Xbox Series X does this too. That's not why I play PlayStation. I buy new technology to play new games that use that technology. Just like I don't expect an ipod to be able to play my old cassette tapes.
@BansheeNorn the guy who wrote this got called out by the guy he wrote it about and the Head of PS Studios. Sackboy, Returnal, Dreams and Asto Bot are clear indicators that this isn't the case.
I can smell xbox fanboy all over you. I don't understand why you fanboys invade comments boards like this. You reek of salt.
Your xbox might be able to play backwards compatible games but that unfortunately is Microsofts sad excuse for not being able to deliver new and innovative games. Might as well continue to deliver the past if you can't deliver the future.
@Alpha_Pulse Backwards compatibility is a great feature, if you have a growing library in one platform. I have several PS4 games in my backlog and it's reassuring to know that I can still play my last gen games on PS5 along with added performance boost. It might also prevent gaming publisher of selling the same game twice to consumers by calling it remastered.
@BansheeNorn Does it play exclusive games that aren't available on other platforms though? Backwards compatibility is nice and all but like I said and based on sales, Exclusives matter, something that Sony and Nintendo are doing so well. Not trying to ditch Xbox but that's reality. Exclusives sell your console. Why does Sony needs an excuse not to have full backwards compatibility when their exclusives are what sells their system? Same with the Switch. Just look at how popular it is despite not having any full on backwards compatibility. Microsoft needs all the push they can get, including a backwards compatibility to sell the Series X
@Yomogi
Name all the ps5 exclusives that arent available on ps4 or pc.
@BrainHacker I'm 100% behind you on that statement it is a great addition but it's not the reason I buy next gen. So many stones are thrown at Sony and Nintendo for lack of backwards compatability but they are still selling more than MS . It is very clear to me that backwards compatibility is not the main driver behind buyer behaviour.
@BansheeNorn all of the PS5 exclusives are exclusive to PS5. How can a "PS5 exclusive" be on PS4 or PC? Assuming you are meaning PlayStation exclusives (sorry if I'm being pedantic) then some are on PC, PS4 and PS5 either as upgrades or b/c. But that's not the argument. A console player might not want a PC and his point was that there are exclusives on PlayStation not available on other platforms which there are. That sir is fact. Just like you cannot play Halo on a PS. GamePass is MS's golden ticket to drive its customer base just like Sonys fans are driven by the quality of its exclusives. This is pretty much very widely known and accessible information right now.
Two very different approaches to the market. There is no one size fits all (thank god).
@BansheeNorn Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart and if you follow the recent news, you will know that there are more to come as Sony is banking on the PS5 exclusives in the coming years. Some may have a PC port but not all of them.
